The "Reverse" Shoulder Prosthesis

For about 14 years now, the "reverse" shoulder prosthesis has been used in Europe.  It is an amazing device that provides a solution to a problem that previously did not have a good solution.  The indications are quite specific, it is not for everyone.  In cases where the rotator cuff is unrepairable, and the patient can not lift the arm away from the body, and the patient meets certain other criteria, then the "reverse" shoulder may be helpful.  What once was a useless arm becomes an extremity that now can function.  Check out the videos of before and after below.

Developed in France, it is now available to a few surgeons across the United States.  Ask your surgeon about the "reverse" if you have been told that your rotator cuff tear is too big to repair and you can't lift your arm away from your body.  Remember, a regular total shoulder operation is different and is for arthritis.  It has excellent results reported across the country and the world.  This is a different device and used for very special cases.  It isn't for everyone.  However, when the criteria for use are met, then there is now hope for a situation that was once hopeless and complications are relatively low.  Talk to your surgeon.
