What are the effects of aging on athletic performance?

Recent studies have noted that as we get older, we lose our strength and power faster than we lose our ability to do endurance exercices and activities.  This reality is true for both men and women.  The studies that point this out mostly suggest that if we are over the age of 30, some form of resistance exercise program is a good idea to try and counteract the loss of strength that occurs with aging.

In the recent article by Marc T. Galloway, American Journal of Orthopedics, Feb 2002, it was demonstrated that men's and women's power lifting decreased 3% per year during the fourth decade and then 1% per year thereafter.  However, the endurance exercise rowing was shown to decrease generally evenly at 0.12% per year for men and 0.23% per year for women.

The article pointed out that the older athlete's performance in both the strength and in the endurance groups  was impressive. It should be noted that the capacity to do significant exercise persists throughout life. Conclusion:  you aren't too old to exercise and when you do, you should do some form of resistance exercise to counteract the tendency to lose strength.  Those of us that are 40 something really need to give it our best effort.  Step up to the challenge of this new information.
